Fitness for the Physically Challenged

When a person experiences illness or injury that affects their mobility it is a very serious situation for them. Not only do they have to deal with the emotional trauma, they are forced to live with their physical limitations. Suddenly the body that has belonged to them is now completely foreign and unfamiliar. Only someone that has

experienced this can really understand the actual impact it has on their very existence. Movements or simple tasks can become totally impossible to do. It is terrifying for the person involved and emotionally draining for family and friends. Everyone, at the same time, just doesn't know what to say or do.

If at all possible, it is important that a highly motivated personal trainer specialist become involved with a physically challenged individual. The trainer can work closely with any therapist involved, to assist with motivation and monitoring of progress. The specialist can also ensure that any exercise program prescribed by them is followed through correctly and safely. It is extremely important to strengthen and maintain those areas of the body that continue to have movement. An exercise program must be followed with regularity to get results. Unfortunately, after a while, motivation to continue begins to diminish and the client's rehabilitation does not reach its full potential. That is why it is important to have a professional trainer and motivator in place to encourage and monitor the progress of the client.

A personal trainer is not a physiotherapist and does not have the training to rehabilitate the injured. They do however have the ability to receive instructions from professionals and coach a client along following the prescribed program as set forth by those personal.

If you are in a wheel chair or dependent on canes to assist in movement, you will be very aware of how important it is to strengthen the upper body to the maximum. Flexibility of movement must also have equal attention. Personal independence is a major concern for most individuals. Weight lifting, mobility exercises and flexibility training can help you to maintain or reach that goal.

The same rule applies to any part of the body still capable of movement no matter how little that may be.

With a properly designed fitness program a client will both physically improve in mobility, and their Frame of Mind will be a place of improved and positive thought. The trainer must have the correct personality to assist in achieving success. Not everyone is compatable and the same can exist with the client and trainer. If at first you do not mesh with the trainer, do not quit there. Try someone new until you find a comfortable space with that individual to work.

Weight control is also an enormous concern for anyone whose caloric output is low. Food is energy in. Expended energy has to be a par to maintain an ideal weight.

Limited movement means low caloric (energy) burn. If one consumes more energy than able to burn off we are faced with weight gain. That is disastrous for someone who is disabled. Symptoms become worse and injury occurs more frequently due to lack of strength to support the body.

Proper diet and regular movement is the only way to avoid such a scenario of events. Unfortunately this is easier said than done.

When one is confined it is very easy to start nibbling just to fill in time. Many find grazing as a form of comfort. It takes a great deal of encouragement and support from others to help the disabled avoid this pitfall.

If you already have a weight issue, snacking can become a living nightmare. Each time you put something into your mouth you feel guilt and disappointment in yourself. This, by the way, is a feeling that is common with all persons who battle with their weight. It is critical that you find a trainer or someone in a support group to assist you through this difficult time. Dealing with a disability is hard enough. If it is compounded with obesity, the mind closes down and any feelings of hope disappear. Whatever you do, don't lose hope! Keep trying until you have the assistance you require to succeed. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and believe in yourself. Negativity is deadly in all walks of life and must be avoided at all times.

Educating yourself by reading how the body uses energy (calories) will help you to understand how our bodies operate and you will be able to choose an appropriate diet for you. It takes a great deal of self discipline to limit our nutritional intake. One tip that I will share with you is to make sure that the only food in your house is healthy. Lay off the fats and sugars and remember leafy greens are great. They are delicious and you can munch away and not feel guilty. Fruit is a sweet treat but keep in mind that it has a high sugar content and if over consumed can have a reverse effect on your weight loss goals.
