| It is important that the subject be dealt with openly, and in a classroom environment so that children feel comfortable discussing this potentially deadly illness. You can be sure that most students know of someone with an eating disorder but do not know how to approach the individual. By discussing eating disorders in a group it also provides an opportunity for someone that may be suffering from such to recognize possible resources. They will learn they are not alone or weird. There is help for these kids! Imagine how lost and afraid a child feels that is living with the illness. It is important that the person delivering information to a group has the ability to achieve an immediate comfort zone with the students. They will then, have a sense of trust in the speaker, therefore opening up to successful conversation. I cannot stress enough the importance of educating our youth about eating disorders to heighten awareness levels and hopefully save lives. Education for Students I am a motivational speaker that educates on the importance of physical activity and getting people of all ages excited about moving. A strong body is a healthy one and with that comes a confident mind. Unfortunately most children do not like to exercise because they compare it to physical education programs in school. For many, these classes are painful and humiliating. Very few of us are athletes but all of us can learn how to move for fun and personal strength. Children need as much confidence as possible to get through their young years successfully. It is very often the self conscious personality that reaches out for attention through negative action. By instructing youth on how to achieve realistic goals we assist them in avoiding many pitfalls in life. It is essential that everyone understand the importance of taking the time each day to care for their body and spirit. Without a healthy lifestyle humans do not operate to the best of their ability therefore robbing themselves of the best quality of existence. This is true at any age. Education for Teachers/Students Eating Disorders I will instruct group leaders on how to identify individuals with eating disorders and how to communicate effectively. I will spend time talking with instructors and provide information regarding the issues directed at eating disorders and their affect on the human body. It is important for teachers to be aware that eating disorders are of an epidemic nature and should not be hidden or ignored. Individuals suffering from this disease live in their own Hell, feeling ashamed and that they have nowhere to go or anyone to turn to. This is very sad indeed and totally unnecessary. Education and permission to speak of this hidden and misunderstood illness is the only way to improve the public awareness level and help heal these broken spirits. |
